Hye guys! Today for our first lesson, we will be talking about adjectives.
What is an ADJECTIVE?
> Adjective is words that are used to
describe something or a NOUN.
> It’s also showing the characteristics
of a noun.
For examples:
They are one happy family.
This is a cute little chick.
More examples:
> I have a black cat. (Black = Color)
> It’s a big house in the middle of
nowhere. (Big = Size)
> The old chair is almost broken. (Old =
Age)
> The Japanese table is sold out.
(Japanese = origin)
> John’s ball is round. (Round = Shape)
So what is the usage of ADJECTIVES?
> An adjectives modifies pronouns or
nouns.
Eg :
My father is brave. He is brave.
> An adjective tells what kind, which
one, how much, or how many.
Eg:
(What kind) We wear black clothes on Friday.
(Which one) She always sit in the front
row.
There are 6 adjectives:
Possessive Adjectives
Modifies a noun, showing possession or ownership.
Example: My, your, his, her, their
> My cat ate my gym suit.
> His mother just ran to her store after knowing there was a thief.
Demonstrative Adjectives
Shows whether the noun its modifies a singular or plural and
whether it's near or far.
Example: this, that, these, those
> Please try this chocolate cake I made.
> Billy wants to try those shoes in that room.
Interrogative Adjectives
Interrogative adjective is used to ask about a particular
noun.
It is used when asking questions.
Example: What, Which
> Which one would you prefer? Tea or coffee?
> What is your favourite colour?
Comparative Adjectives
Comparative adjective is used to make a comparison or to
differentiate between two nouns or pronouns.
> Adding “er” at the end of the adjectives.
Example: Taller, Fatter, Louder
> Tamin is taller that Fatimah.
> Fatimah is shorter than Tamin.
But some adjectives, we can’t add “er” at the end of the
word. We have to use the magic word “more” to show the comparison.
Example:
> She is more beautiful than Aminah.
“ We can’t actually use ‘beautifuller’”
So be careful when you are using a comparative adjectives
and be aware of them.
Superlative Adjectives
Describes the extreme quality of something.
It is used when we use two or more nouns/pronouns.
Noun/Pronoun + the + adjective + est
DON’T FORGET TO ADD “THE” BEFORE SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVE
Example: She is the prettiest girl in the class.
Some of the adjectives, we cannot add ‘est’ after them.
We have to use “the most” to describe or to explain the
extreme quality.
Example:
> Putina is wearing the most expensive watch.
> Monalisa is the most elegant woman within the centuries.
> This is not the most comfortable situation I’ve been
through.
Articles (Baby Adjectives)
A, an and the are the most frequently used adjectives.
A and an are the indefinite articles because they are refer
to any
general nouns.
Example:
> I think watching a movie is more fun with eating popcorns.
